Preventive Dentistry – Plano, TX
Protecting Smiles & Maintaining Optimal Oral Health
Keeping smiles whole and healthy for life is much simpler than repairing teeth that are already damaged. That’s why preventive dentistry services are such an important part of every oral health care plan at Parkway Vista Dental. We encourage patients to visit us twice a year for preventive dentistry in Plano, TX. These six month checkups allow us to partner with patients in preventing common oral health concerns, and make it possible for our dentists to diagnose and treat those concerns we can’t prevent in the earliest possible stages. If you live in Plano, Frisco, or other nearby communities, we invite you to contact our dedicated dentistry team to schedule an appointment today.
Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings
The first step in keeping smiles whole and healthy for life is visiting our dental office at least two times each year. These six month checkups include a complete assessment of diagnostics (x-rays, intraoral photography, early cavity detection), and a thorough visual examination of patients’ smiles, screening for tooth decay, gum disease, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching), and oral cancer. Next, one of our skilled dental hygienists will carefully remove plaque and tartar buildup from even hard to reach areas of patients’ teeth. Finally, Dr. Bita Kamali sits down with patients to answer their questions, review the results of our careful examination, and create a personalized treatment plan to help patients achieve or maintain their healthiest smiles. Continuing these twice a year visits to our dental office is the foundation for every treatment plan.
Dental Sealants
In many cases, dental sealants are an ideal option to protect teeth from decay. Bacteria in the mouth absorb nutrients from foods and beverages we consume each day, and as they process these nutrients, bacteria produce a sticky, acidic byproduct known as plaque. Most patients remove plaque with regular tooth brushing, but in some cases, patients are unable to remove plaque before it weakens the tooth enamel exposing patients’ smiles to tooth decay. Dental sealants place a physical barrier between patients’ teeth and the decay-causing plaque. This is especially important for back teeth, which have deep pits and grooves where plaque is difficult to remove. These sealants are applied in a liquid form, and once they are hardened in place, dental sealants create a clear, plastic barrier between teeth and plaque, preventing tooth decay. Most frequently suggested for children, we may also recommend dental sealants for adult patients who experience frequent decay.
Nightguards for TMJ & Bruxism Therapy
TMJ dysfunction (TMD) and bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching) are not always related. However, patients are often offered the same effective treatment option, custom made nightguards from our Plano, TX dental office. These nightguards shift the jawbone to its ideal position allowing it to rest comfortably during sleep. Additionally, nightguards place a physical barrier between teeth preventing potential damage from unconscious teeth grinding and clenching. There are store-bought varieties available, but these solutions are often not as comfortable or effective. This is especially true for those patients trying to relieve the pain of TMD, as one-size-fits-all solutions don’t typically place the jaw in its most comfortable position.

Oral Cancer Screenings
As part of our dedication to helping patients achieve and maintain their optimal level of oral and overall health, we include oral cancer screenings as part of each six month checkup. These screenings make it possible for our dentists to diagnose oral cancer in the earliest stages, and partner with patients to receive the oral cancer treatments they need. Our oral cancer screenings are quick and painless. In fact, most patients don’t even notice we’ve completed the screening.
Dental Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride has been used by dentists for many years because it helps prevent and even reverse tooth decay. This is why it is often found in toothpastes and added to water. Every day, your teeth are constantly being attacked and broken down by plaque that is continually forming on your teeth. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in food and water that helps restore the enamel and prevent this process from causing a cavity. You will always get a fluoride treatment whenever you come in for a check-up or cleaning.
For those who prefer to use toothpaste without Fluoride or SLS, our dental office will work with each patient to establish an oral care regimen that is right for them. Non-fluorinated toothpastes use natural ingredients such as hydrated Silica, a mild abrasive to remove plaque, plus a variety of natural ingredients such as Propolis, Tea Tree Oil and Xylitol to prevent the adhesion of bacteria to teeth and remove plaque. Other ingredients provide help with the remineralizing of enamel and often contain essential oils for taste and odor. Miracle Propolis Toothpaste with Tea Tree Oil in a 6.4oz tube is a popular oral hygiene product for kids and adults. It offers No Fluoride, No foaming agents, no artificial color, flavor, preservatives or petrochemicals. Athletic Sportsguards
In order to protect smiles from potential damage, we encourage every patient who participates in sports where their smiles may come in contact with other players, hard surfaces, or sports equipment to wear a custom-crafted oral appliance from our dental office. These sportsguards, unlike the over the counter varieties, offer patients comfortable protection. Because they are crafted to fit the patients’ smile, they are not bulky or uncomfortable like the one-size-fits-all varieties available from local sporting goods stores.
